She cried in the dark
Pride lay still
But awake in her heart
She had wanted to make love
He wanted to f*ck
She
wanted more
He had had more than enough
So he carelessly lay
Half asleep without a loving word to say
She stayed huddled in pain
The love inside her tortured bloodied and slain
'Only whores ask' he said
He had paid lobola so f*ck
it he was going to play!
NO did not mean no
No meant pain
At least that is what his slaps had translated
Again and again
and again…
Sorry meant everything was normal
Sorry meant he had had a long day
Sorry meant she would shop and he would pay.
Her silence broke his rules.
Her silence he could not use.
He rolled off her in anger
And fell asleep soon after.
The perfect stranger,
Unaware of any danger.
She cried in the dark
Pride lay still but awake in her heart.
He said , 'Pain comes only to make you understand'
And she wished him wisdom
As she raised the sharp knife in her hand…
