I remember when he used
To be a man
And a sweet man at that
Sticking up for his girlfriend
Making spicy spaghetti
And syrup-covered pancakes
As sweet as his kisses
And warm as his hugs
I remember when the bedroom
Used to be occupied
With just the two of you
Love Jones playing in the living room
As the two who weren’t really company
Looked at each other and smiled knowingly
I remember when things were good
Like red velvet cake
There was no heartbreak
No get-away vehicles
And you and the tears
Staying up late
Wasn’t what was keeping me up at night
Waiting to see when you would come home
To gossip with me
Looking at me with love-glazed eyes
And a 120-watt smile
Telling me of lovemaking
I remember when I didn’t
have to watch your heartbreaking
I remember when he used to be a man
And you used to be his woman
And you were happy
-Precious-
Dedicated to my best friend, Rochell, and love that was better gone than lost.
